A Leap Towards Electrifying the Future of Transportation
In a significant move, Cleveland-based electric motorcycle startup Land Moto has secured an additional $3 million in funding, bringing its total to $10 million. This investment is poised to propel the company towards diversifying its battery design and manufacturing capabilities, further solidifying its position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
A Brief Overview of Land Moto’s Primary Product
At the heart of Land Moto’s offerings is the striking District electric motorbike, which seamlessly blends the essence of e-bikes and motorcycles. Powered by one or two large, Land-designed batteries, the District can operate at Class 2 speeds without a permit or reach above 70 MPH in performance mode. The bike’s innovative design has garnered attention from enthusiasts and professionals alike.
The Power of Core Batteries
Land Moto’s Core batteries come in various sizes, with a nominal capacity of up to 5.5 kWh. These batteries offer an impressive range of 80-100 miles and can also be used to charge devices or power small appliances during a power outage. The company is set to release the Power Tap accessory, which adds a 400W, three-prong outlet and four USB-C plugs to the bike’s side, providing users with additional flexibility for off-grid applications.
A New Era in Battery Manufacturing
The recent $3 million funding round will primarily be used to invest in Land Moto’s battery manufacturing and design capabilities. This strategic move allows the company to produce its batteries in-house, enabling it to ramp up production in 2024 and continue innovating and improving the design of its Core batteries.
In-House Battery Manufacturing: A Pivotal Moment for Land Moto
Evan Painter, Land’s head of design, emphasized the significance of this development in a press release. "Being able to make electric batteries in-house is a pivotal moment for the team. It allows us to ramp up battery manufacturing in 2024 and continue to innovate and improve the intuitive design of the battery."
Expansion into Off-Grid Applications
As Painter noted, Land Moto has observed the electric ecosystem expanding beyond specialized transportation, micromobility, and off-grid purposes. The company is poised to capitalize on this trend by developing next-generation batteries with enhanced features and capabilities.
Next-Gen Battery Design: A Modular Approach
The newly redesigned battery features built-in inputs and outputs, including USB-C, USB-A, an AC outlet, and solar input ports. This modular design enables seamless integration into various applications, from micromobility to off-grid power solutions.
Future Applications and Integration
While the company is tight-lipped about potential home use cases and integrations, it’s clear that Land Moto is committed to pushing the boundaries of electric battery technology. As Painter hinted at CES, future developments may include innovative features and applications that take advantage of in-house manufacturing capabilities.
A Bright Future Ahead
With this latest funding round, Land Moto has solidified its position as a leader in the electric motorcycle industry. The company’s commitment to investing in battery design and manufacturing is poised to drive innovation, improve efficiency, and expand its product offerings into new markets. As the demand for sustainable energy solutions continues to grow, Land Moto is well-positioned to electrify the future of transportation.
