Truecaller Updates Its iOS App with Improved Spam Detection and Performance
Better Spam Detection and Faster Performance
Truecaller has been working on building a family of apps that cater to different communication methods, but it’s also focused on improving its flagship app. Recently, the company released a significant update for its eponymous iOS app. The new version boasts improved spam detection, faster performance, quick onboarding, and a smaller app size.
On-Par Spam Detection with Android Counterpart
One of the most notable updates is that Truecaller’s iPhone app now has call detection capabilities comparable to its Android counterpart. This means users can expect better performance in identifying spam calls. The company addressed user concerns by rebuilding the iOS app’s code base to take advantage of Apple’s CallKit API.
10-Times Larger Local Caller ID List
In the previous version, Truecaller could store a limited list of spam numbers and caller IDs locally on the iPhone. With this update, users can now store up to 10 times more information. The local caller ID list will grow as more people use the newer version. For free users, the list gets updated every three days, while premium users receive daily updates for faster caller identification.
Settings Toggles for Advanced Features
To enable features like identifying verified business calls, spam calls, previously searched numbers, and calls from other Truecaller users, users need to navigate to Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification. Here, they must turn on all toggles. This only applies to the iPhone, as Android users do not require this step.
30% Smaller App Size and 50% Speed Improvements
By rewriting the code, Truecaller claims it has delivered a faster experience even on older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 6s. The company boasts that it has reduced the app size by 30% overall and improved speed by 50% on most iPhone models. The updated app (version 12.0) requires an iPhone running iOS 14 or later, whereas the previous version had a minimum requirement of iOS 13.
Addressing Privacy Concerns
Truecaller’s methods for detecting spam calls have raised privacy concerns in the past. An investigation by Rest of World and Caravan India earlier this year alleged serious issues with the company’s practices. However, Truecaller refuted these allegations in a blog post, stating that the investigation was based on inaccuracies.
The Future of Communication
Truecaller is working to provide users with better communication tools. With its updated iOS app, users can expect improved performance and spam detection capabilities. As the company continues to develop new features and improve existing ones, it’s essential to consider the balance between security and user experience.
